I was under the impression that .edu, .gov, and .org links weighs just as much in the eye of Google as links from a .com or a .net. Nevertheless, .edu and .gov domains by their very nature are more likely to hold authority than other domains because they’re primarily educational as opposed to commercial. A very large percentage of .edu and .gov domains will be in the PR6+ category, whereas most .com domains may well be in the PR0-PR1 category. For this reason, I’d much rather spend my time looking through a thousand .edu/.gov domains than a thousand .com/.net/.info domains.
